UNDER THE SEA

I made this cake for the Nisha's 4th birthday on March 11, 2006. She is the daughter of Blake's colleague, Poorti, and her husband Michael. Last October I made the duck on a pond cake for Nisha's younger sister Anika. Although, we have been to dinner with Poorti and her husband, I hadn't the pleasure of meeting either or the cuties until this Under the Sea birthday party. It's been really wonderful to get to know the whole family and helps me feel more connected with the area.

The cake is made from the famous "Chocolate Blackout Cake" recipe by Margaret Braun. The icing is my favorite italian meringue buttercream, unflavored. The filling is chocolate mousse. All the sea creatures are made from colored white and dark chocolate. They were so much fun to make!!! I took the opportunity with this cake theme of sea creatures to further explore and practice chocolate coloring and molding.

Since moving to the bay area, I have found a great cake shop called Barbara of Pauline's in South San Jose. Barbara referred me to this great candy making shop in Milpitas called Creative Treats. They have walls of just candy molds. I was in heaven! I knew I had hit a goldmine when I asked for a mold for a shark, a whale and a dolpin and not only did they have all three, but they had a variety of each!
